What is Search Advertising?

Search Advertising, Search Marketing, Paid Search, Pay Per Click (PPC), Search engine Marketing(SEM)(and there are probably a few versions of the idea that we don't even know), is a system set up by search engines to allow you to pay for preferential placement of highly organized Search terms. This placement is different from one search engine to the next, but for simplicity’s sake let’s sticks with Google and Bing/Yahoo. On these search engines you get to be placed not only at the top, but also in a side bar, and your placement within these is further determined by relevance and how much you are willing to pay for your desired keyword.

How much will it cost me?

That is the best part; you get to set the budget. Not only do you get to set the budget, but you only get charged when someone actually clicks on the ad! That right you only get charged per click (thus the name pay-per-click advertising). You can define your budget in any amount you want per day or per month. Additionally you can select particular ad buys and create different ad’s for different keywords or different key markets.

How much control will i have?

Most cost-per-click prices are set via an automated auction system. As an advertiser, you get to specify the maximum amount (max CPC bid) you're willing to pay for each prospective customer that visits your website by clicking on your ad. This bid then determines how high up on the search results page your ad appears, which eventually determines how often people notice and click on your ad. On top of that you get to pick you keywords and how and where they appear.

What will I have to do?

As much or as little as you want, it is all up to you. You can pick everything, set a budget for each of your markets. Or you can let us handle all of it. Most of our clients like to let us help them pick keywords, while they choose which markets are valuable to them, since they tend to know what’s best for their area. We typically recommend starting budgets for a test case over a few months to see if Search Advertising will be beneficial. Our clients can change any detail they want at any time.

Where will my advertisements run?

Your advertisements can run anywhere, dependent upon the search engine! It all comes down to the keywords and your target market. You get to pick your keywords (most search engine help, too!) since you know your market best. These keywords are what someone might be searching for and would lead them to your product. Once we combine those keywords with your market segments (which geographic regions you want to be displayed in) and wala! You now know which situations and where your advertisements will show up in.
